Gmail allows you to import and export your contacts in various file formats, including CSV format (comma separated value file) and vCard format.

But why would you want to export contacts from Gmail in the first place?

Here are some reasons you could export Gmail contacts:

1. Building an email campaign list

By exporting contacts from your Gmail contact list as a CSV file (comma separated values), you can create a contact list for email campaigns. This saves you the effort of creating a new contact for each campaign recipient.

2. Backing up your contacts

You can back up your Google contacts as an external file in case you can’t access your Google account and need your contact information.

3. Add contacts to another email account

You might export your contacts to use them with another Google Gmail account or another email client such as Microsoft Outlook (, Yahoo Mail, or Mozilla Thunderbird.

How to Export Contacts from Gmail (Step-by-Step Guide)

It’s extremely simple to export Google contacts.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to export contacts:

A. For Desktop

Step 1

Log in to your Google email account. Click on the Google App icon (shown by the arrow in the image below) and select the Contacts app from the Google Apps drop-down menu.


Alternatively, you can open your Google contact page directly.

Step 2

The Google Contact manager interface will open in a new tab.

Here, from the list of contacts presented, you can select the contacts you want to export from Gmail.

You can:

Select contacts individually by hovering your mouse over the email contacts and clicking the checkbox that appears next to each contact.Select All contacts in your Google Contacts folder using the Selection actions icon (indicated by an arrow in the image below.)

After you select the contacts you want to export from your Contacts folder, click on the More actions icon (shown by the arrow in the image below) on the top left. Then, click on the Export button.

Alternatively, you can click the Export option in the left sidebar as well.


Step 4

The Export contacts pop-up will appear.

In this pop-up, you can select whether you want to export:

Selected contactsAll email contacts from your Google Gmail address bookAll/selected contacts from a particular Label

You can also select the file format for your exports.

Google offers three options for the export format:

Google CSV: The Google CSV format is best for backups or importing your selected contacts into another Google account.Outlook CSV: Choose the Outlook CSV format if you want to import contacts into Microsoft Outlook as Outlook contacts.vCard file: This is best for importing Google contacts into an Apple address book or other applications.


Step 5

After you’ve made your choices, click on the Export button and the download will automatically begin.

If you chose the CSV file format, you can open it as an Excel spreadsheet, Google Sheet, or a similar spreadsheet program or app, and edit or delete any duplicate contacts.


You’re now all set to backup your Google contacts, or import/export them into another app.

B. For an Android Device

Currently, you can export Google contacts only from Android phones.

On an Android device, you can export the contacts folder in a VCF file format using the Google Contacts app.

Step 1

Open the Google Contacts app on your Android phone or tablet.

Step 2

Navigate to the Menu icon (indicated by three horizontal lines), then tap on Settings > Export to start exporting your Android phone contacts.

Step 3

Choose the Gmail account you want to export contacts from (you can even choose an additional Google account to export from multiple accounts simultaneously).

Step 4

Tap on Export to .vcf file to export your Android contacts as an export file with the file name contacts.vcf. (Don’t worry, you can rename the file if needed.)

Note: Currently, it’s not possible to export your Android device/iOS phone contacts as a CSV format spreadsheet. 

However, you can sync your Android contacts or iPhone contacts from your Android phone/iPhone device and create a spreadsheet from them via the web app.

This method finds all of the From, To, and Reply-To addresses in a specific Gmail Label.

Step 1

Open Gmail and click on the Label you want to export Gmail contacts from so that you can view only the messages in the Label.

The Gmail Search bar at the top should say something like in:


In my case, I have a Gmail Label called “Graphic Designer” in my email account, which contains emails from a bunch of potential graphic designers I’m considering hiring.

Step 2

Click the red magnifying glass button next to the Search bar. Wait for to scrape the new Google contacts in the Label.


You’ll see that is chugging through your Label.


Step 3

All of the addresses that were found in the Label will show up in the To field of the Gmail Compose window.
