stairs not only give us a way to get from one floor to another, but they can also help the energy that enters our home, called chi, move unobstructed, up and down with ease and No problem. If stairs are not placed correctly, they can inhibit the proper flow of energy throughout the house. sometimes poorly placed ladders can harm people both physically and financially. As an architect, I have described the feng shui rules for the location, size and shape of stairs, under the following headings:
what are the feng shui rules for stair placement? what are the feng shui rules for stair shapes? what are the feng shui rules for stair sizes? what are the feng shui rules for stair railings, risers and treads?

what are the feng shui rules for stair placement?
The position of the ladder is very important in feng shui. could be positive or detrimental to the well-being of the occupants.
location of the stairs: stairs located on the side of the house rather than in the center are preferable. the best location for stairs is inside the house, away from the entrance and sharing an exterior wall of the house. according to feng shui, when the staircase is in the center of the house there can be loss of wealth and breaks in the family. Remedy: Block the view of this staircase if possible to reduce its effect by placing a tall plant or tall bookcase.
Stairs that point towards main doors are not preferred: Stairs should not be opposite the front door. If your stairway terminates at the front door, it causes Chi to rush out of the main door causing loss of wealth, difficulties for the head of the household, neck and head problems. Remedy: Put a divider between the last step and the entrance to discourage the Chi from exiting. Or hang a small mirror at the back of the door to reflect the energy back up the stairs. Otherwise, hang a crystal between the stairs and the front door.
stairs in front of bedroom doors should be avoided: if a ladder stops in front of a bedroom door, it can cause energy to flow out of the bedroom, causing health problems and low energy such as low thyroid or depression. remedy: lay down a mat to stop the flow of chi, discouraging its rapid exit.
stairs leading up to a window are avoidable: as you’re probably wasting power. remedy: Block this window by installing a closable blind so chi doesn’t run out the window.
what are the feng shui rules for stair shapes?
The most common stairs are straight, split, I-shaped, curved and spiral. the form depends on the space available, the limitations, the intensity of use, etc. but in feng shui, some forms of stairs are not acceptable as they can impede the proper flow of chi.
Positive – A Curved staircase is both elegant and beautiful. It channels energy between spaces in a pleasant and inviting way and is therefore considered the best, according to Feng Shui.

Positive – Straight and L-shaped stairs encourage chi to flow more naturally, rather than rushing.
negative: a spiral staircase is considered very unfavorable, especially if it is located in the center of a house. it can negatively affect the heart and blood pressure of the occupants because, symbolically, it looks like a corkscrew hurting the heart of the home. remedy: it is better not to have a spiral staircase if it is in the center of your house.
Negatives: Split or stepladders often seen in split level homes, should be avoided, especially if facing the front door as they are negative for the patriarch or supporter family, opportunities are missed and success is elusive remedy: block your view of the ladder. or wrap a long string of ivy (real or artificial) around the handrail from the top step to the bottom step. place a plant at the top of the stairs or in the center of the stairs where it curves.
what are the feng shui rules for the size of stairs?
The best sizes for stairs are those that are proportional to the space, not too big and not too small. the effects of having narrow stairs and a steep slope have been described here:
narrow stairs: It goes without saying that they are not recommended as they cause a feeling of constriction and claustrophobia.
Steep Incline: The incline should not be too steep as this is a safety issue that can easily turn into a financial issue.
small landings: landings should be wide. otherwise, you may feel like you will fall backwards down the stairs. Remedy: Make sure there is sufficient lighting and the landing is not blocked.
what are the feng shui rules for railings and stair treads?
Handrails should always be provided: Stairs without handrails make us feel unsafe and unsafe.

no open risers: Stairs must be complete and must always have risers (the vertical part between the treads). Stairs with open risers cause energy leaks. this especially affects residents on the upper floors, as they receive very little chi or energy. Remedy: Add backings or risers to stairs. if that’s not possible, place potted plants under the stairs to help raise chi.
Stair Coverings: Red rugs should never grace stairs as they resemble blood flowing down. carpet, wood, or tile are fine, with wood being preferred as it offers a rising, rising energy.
The space under the stairs should be used for storage: It is good feng shui to use the space under a staircase for storage instead of leaving it empty. if the space is open under the stairs, you can place a home altar there. If you’re using it for storage, consider placing money boxes, vases of wealth, or work-related items in there.
Bathrooms under staircases should be avoided: Bathrooms located under stairs, and particularly those in the center of the home, drain away energy and wealth and hurt all the residents of the home.
Avoid bodies of water under a ladder: If your ladder has space under it, refrain from placing water there, such as fountains, ponds, aquariums, etc., these can harm children.
stair landings: It is better to have stairs without landings in the middle. if there is a landing, consider lighting the steps or wall of the stairs to create good energy and help chi to go up and down the stairs.
