criminal background check
who checks homeadvisor’s background?
The owner or director of every business in the homeadvisor network (except corporate accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot run a background check on all employees of a company; background checks are done on the owner or director only. As always, we encourage you to do your own research on the companies you hire, including inquiring directly with the companies about employee background check policies.
what does the background check cover?
We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal history search in the state in which the business owner or director works. Our third-party vendor uses a National Criminal Database (“NCD”) to screen service professionals. companies will not be admitted to the network if their owners or directors have the following offenses on their available criminal record*:

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime in question is a felony.

Please note that NCD reporting is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM , sd, ut, va, vt and wy. after initial admission to the homeadvisor network, companies are reassessed every two years.
how is covid-19 affecting homeadvisor’s background check program?
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, various government agencies and courts across the country have temporarily closed their offices. Although HomeAdvisor will continue its background check program to the extent possible, these closures may prevent some background checks from being performed. Please note that during this period, if we are unable to perform a background check, HomeAdvisor will allow the business to enter the network and connect the business to consumers. As affected government agencies and courts begin to reopen, we will resume our program in those jurisdictions. As always, we encourage consumers to do their own research, to the extent possible, before engaging with any business.
